Jonathan Ray's Wine Pick: Inniskillin Niagara Estate Riesling Icewine 2021
.jpg)
Icewine is Canada’s gift to the world, well, more specifically, Ontario’s gift to the world. What? Oh, yes, Ontaria makes wine and darn good wine too.
There are over 100 wineries in the Niagara Peninsula alone, farming some 14,000 acres and producing Rieslings, Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs and glorious, giggle-makingly tasty Icewines, the most celebrated of which comes from mighty Inniskillin.
Fully ripe grapes are left on the vine to freeze and are handpicked, berry by berry, only once the temperature has fallen to below -8C and the concentration of sugar is almost double that of normal grapes.
The result is stunning, a sweet wine of ridiculous charm, full of ripe apricot, pear and mango. Quite simply, Inniskillin makes sweet wines to rival the best in the world and I include Ch. Yquem. Enjoy a glass over one of Steve Edwards’s sublime puddings at Etch or buy a bottle at Brunswick. Either way you won’t stop grinning.

OctoberBest is an annual restaurant festival which is directly linked to the Brighton’s Best Restaurants Dome Award winners of that same year. Winners of One, Two and Three Domes, as well as those awarded a Local Favourite rating are invited to participate. During one designated fortnight in October, each restaurant offers diners a special menu which best showcases their food. It’s a great opportunity for restaurants to attract new customers, and for diners to try somewhere new at a discounted price.
